A revision of the genus <i>Laophontina</i> Norman & T. Scott (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) OMA
Fiers, F..
The genus <i>Laophontina</i> is revised after re-examination of the typeseries of the species and analyses of new materials from the East African coast and the Caribbean. The genus <i>Laophontina</i> as redefined herein unifies <i>L. dubia, L. acantha, L. noodti,</i> and <i>L. posidoniae</i>. The recently described <i>L. paradubia</i> is considered as conspecific with <i>L. dubia</i>. All other species presently assembled in the genus are allocated to different genera. <i>Galapalaophonte</i> is redefined and comprises <i>G. pacifica, G. triarticulata</i> and <i>G. variabilis</i> besides four new species. <i>Laophontina distincta</i> and...

Allocation of Laophonte trispinosa Sewell to Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. and the description of X. carcinicola spec. nov. (Harpacticoida: Laophontidae) Naturalis
Fiers, F..
Laophonte trispinosa Sewell is reported here from various localities in the Indian and the West Pacific Ocean, and is allocated to the herein erected genus Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. A second species, X. carcinicola spec. nov. is described from Indon »sia. The genus Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. is most closely related with Echinolaophonte Nicholls. Both species of this genus live in association with decapods, mainly Xanthidae, and occur on the carapax of their hosts, between the bristles. Comparison of the copepodid development clearly shows that the advanced morphology of Xanthilaophonte gen. nov. resulted from heterochrony events.

Copepod composition, abundance and diversity in Makupa Creek, Mombasa, Kenya OceanDocs
Osore, M.; Fiers, F.; Daro, M.H..
The taxonomic composition, abundance and spatio-temporal distribution of copepods were analysed from monthly zooplankton samples collected in Makupa creek and Mombasa Harbour (Makupa creek was until recently subjected to considerable dumping of domestic and industrial waste). At least 51 copepod species belonging to 38 genera in the families Calanoida (25), Harpacticoida (5), Poecilostomatoida (7) and Cyclopoida (1) were identified. The most common genera were Acartia, Acrocalanus, Corycaeus, Oncaea and Oithona. Copepods bloomed in the wet months of November and April (75 to 158/m3). Abundance was consistently high near the creek mouth and low within the creek enclosure. Copepod diversity (H’) was slightly higher (2.00 to 2.57) during September, November,...

New Tetragonicipitidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from the Indo-Pacific OMA
Fiers, F.; De Troch, M..
During an intensive study of the copepod associations living on the seagrass <i>Thalassia hemprichii</i> (Ehrenberg) Ascherson in Gazi Bay (Kenya), three representatives of the harpacticoid family Tetragonicipitidae Lang, 1944 were found. <i>Diagoniceps laevis</i> Willey, 1930 previously reported from Bermuda (type locality) and the Bahamas. was found in Gazi Bay. Comparison with the Atlantic material revealed only minor differences. <i>Odaginiceps immanis</i> n. sp. is the fourth species of the genus, which was known until now from three species described from the Central Atlantic. The new genus <i>Mwania</i> is defined for <i>M. phytocola</i> n. sp. which, with its three-segmented endopodite of...

New Tetragonicipitidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from the Yucatecan continental shelf (Mexico), including a revision of the genus <i>Diagoniceps</i> Willey OMA
Fiers, F..
Representatives of the family Tetragonicipitidae encountered in samples from marine and lagoonal localities on the Yucatecan continental shelf are described. <i>Ph. yucatanensis</i> n. sp. is added to the <i>furciger</i> species-group of the genus <i>Phyllopodopsyllus</i>. Resulting from the discovery of four new species which, at first sight, show close resemblance with the species known in the genus <i>Diagoniceps</i> Willey, a review of the genus is presented. Initially, the type-species of the genus <i>Diagoniceps, D. laevis</i> Willey, is redescribed in detail based on material from the Bahamas and specimens reported previously from Bermuda, type-region. Three out of the six previously...

Range extension and microhabitat of <i>Lightiella incisa</i> (Cephalocarida) OMA
De Troch, M.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
During an intensive meiofauna sampling campaign in intertidal seagrass beds along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), 131 specimens of <i>Lightiella incisa</i> (Cephalocarida, Crustacea) were recovered from the sediment. Two-thirds of the specimens were adults, one-third were pre-adults. This collection is the first record of this minute primitive crustacean in the western part of the Caribbean Sea, and extends the known range 3000 km from the type locality of Hastings Bay, Barbados. A detailed sampling protocol and environmental data made it possible to study the microhabitat preferences of this species, and perhaps for cephalocarids in general for the first time. The vertical distribution of <i>L. incisa</i> in...

Robustunguis gen. nov., a genus of decapod associated laophontids (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Naturalis
Fiers, F..
The genus Robustunguis gen. nov. is erected for two species of laophontid harpacticoids: R. ungulatus spec. nov. and R. minor spec. nov. Both species were recovered from washings of decapod crustaceans collected along the coasts of Florida (U.S.A.) and Shimoni (Kenya). Robustunguis gen. nov. is closely related to Coullia Hamond, but differs significantly from the latter because of the remarkable prehensile first leg adapted to clench the bristles covering the body and body parts of the hosts.

The laophontid genus Loureirophonte Jakobi, 1953 (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) * Naturalis
Fiers, F..
So far, only three species are known in the laophontid genus Loureirophonte Jakobi. In the present contribution five new species are described, and two species formerly attributed to other laophontid genera (Paraiaophonte subterranea Lang and Laophonte cesareae Por), are allocated to Loureirophonte. A redescription of L. cesareae, based on type-material, is included. Relying on the increased understanding of loureirophontid morphology, the diagnoses of L. catharinensis, type-species of the genus, and L. paranaensis are amended. Finally, three species-groups are defined within the genus: the catharinensisgroup, the cesareae-group and the subterranea-group.

Two new species of <i>Mesochra</i> Boeck, 1865 (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from a coastal lagoon in Sinaloa State, Mexico OMA
Gomez Noguera, S.E.; Fiers, F..
Two new species of the genus <i>Mesochra, M. pacifica<i> n. sp. and</i>M. pseudoparva</i> n. sp. are described from Ensenada del Pabellón Lagoon (southeastern Gulf of California, Mexico). Both species are considered as most closely related to <i>M. parva</i> Thomson 1946, although they share some features with <i>M. sewelli</i> Lang 1948. A particular forked structure on the male P3 endopodite of <i>M. pseudoparva</i> n. sp. was found and the homology of this structure is discussed. An updated key to the species in the genus is provided.

Zonation and structuring factors of meiofauna communities in a tropical seagrass bed (Gazi Bay, Kenya) OMA
De Troch, M.; Gurdebeke, S.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
This study deals with the relation between tropical meiofauna and environmental variables by comparing the 'benthic' (i.e. in the bare sediment adjacent to seagrass plants) and the 'epiphytic' (i.e. in samples including seagrass plants) meiofauna associated with five seagrass species from the high intertidal to the high subtidal zone in Gazi Bay (Kenya). Ordination and variance analysis revealed three distinct 'benthic' and two 'epiphytic' meiofauna assemblages. These assemblages corresponded entirely with those identified for the seagrass species: a high intertidal pioneer association (<i>Halophila ovalis/Halodule wrightii</i>), an intertidal climax assemblage (<i>Thalassia hemprichii</i>) and a high subtidal pioneer association...
